English Lessons - Making It Fun!

The English lessons on double negatives are the girls' favorites! They get a kick out of saying the sentences out loud....especially when they throw in a 'southern twang' for added emphasis. Just part of keeping school 'fun'!

I've used Shurley English the past couple of years with the girls. This has been great in diagramming sentences. Not sure what I'll use next year, but I know it will be time to move on from this particular product. Part of the joy and freedom of homeschooling - being able to research and decide what is best for each child (student) from year-to-year.

"Rapunzel" at Maitisong

On Wednesday, February 9, the girls and I finally attended our first 'show' at Maitisong. (Click on the 'Maitisong' link to learn more about this theater.) By the way, 'Maitisong' means "place of entertainment' in Setswana.

The show we attended was a pantomime of "Rapunzel". I was thinking this was going to be a 'quiet' production...acting out without words. Sounded interesting, huh? Well, there was speaking! Seems the definition here of 'pantomime' is a play (with speaking) in which the audience is involved. At various times the cast would ask questions of the audience as a whole. (Ex. Cheering for the prince; booing the hag, etc.) It was quite entertaining!

Enjoy the pictures of our outing.

(First picture above is of the outside of 'Maitisong' theater.)

The 'Hag', played by a tall gentleman. Funny part here....when the Hag sat down on the edge of the stage - in front of a young boy seated on the front row ---- the boy said, "That's a MAN!!!" That was so funny!!! We all laughed at the boy's surprising discovery. Didn't phase the Hag.

The Hag, with the loaf of bread she made after chanting her spell and dance around the caldron. Quite funny when she pulled out the loaf of bread.

Singing "I'm So Lonely" and wanting someone to share her bread with.

The poor hungry boy who tried to steal the Hag's bread.

The Hag with Rapunzel (the doll).

Rapunzel's father, coming to take back Rapunzel.

Rapunzel, all grown up. Love the wig.

Rapunzel being tied up with her hair by the Hag.

The Prince!

The Prince - running away to hide from the Hag.

Another 'must see' performance coming up at Maitisong is the Drakensburg Boys' Choir. Can't wait for tickets to go on sale! BTW - the tickets to see 'Rapunzel' were just P15 (about $2) each.
