A Few More Sights of Gabs

A few more 'sights of Gabs' for you. These pics were taken back in March - and yes, I'm just now uploading these to the blog.

More pics are coming - there's so much more for you to see!

This pic was taken as I was about to turn in to one of the shopping malls. Driving and snappin' at the same time - didn't turn out too bad. :-)
Notice the hill off in the distance. I guess you could call these small mountains. I'll have to research what these are actually called. Seeing these 'hills' off in the distance is a common sight around Gabs. Makes for some beautiful landscapes.

This was taken after I left the mall. The sign with the circle is for a 'traffic circle' or roundabout. To try to describe how these work - think of a clock with the positions 12, 3, 6 and 9. I think of myself as being at the 6 position as I'm entering the circle - and then go to the 9, 12 or 3 position. If you're turning at 9, you must be in the left-lane as you approach the traffic circle. If you're turning at 12 you can choose either the left or right lane. If you need to go all the way around to 3 (or even back to 6) you must be in the right lane - or you'll get honked at - or possibly even hit. These are pretty simple - just 2 lanes going around the circle. It isn't as difficult as it sounds, once you get the hang of it. The key is to 'jump in' and go when there's an opening - or the people behind you will definitely blow their horns at you. It is a good idea to use your turn signal to let others know when you're about to exit the circle. Though most people don't do this...imagine that!!!

Goats walking along by the roadside is not an uncommon sight. You might also see cows or chickens. We've seen donkeys a time or two as well.

A car dealership - this one is for Toyota and Lexus. Toyota's are the most popular vehicles here - cars, trucks and SUVs. (Notice the hills off in the distance?)

One of the many gas (petrol) stations. Here, however, the stations do not have boards announcing their gas prices. All the stations I've been to so far - and I think it's safe to say this is the norm here - are full service stations. An attendant will pump the gas for you, while another cleans your windshield, checks your oil and tire pressure. Providing a tip to the attendants is basically expected.

Another common sight along the roadside all over town and even in neighborhoods (at busy streets/intersections) are these roadside food stands. People set up their table and umbrella (if they have one - to block the hot sun) and sale their wares - just about anything you can imagine - food cooked at home and brought in a large pot; fruits and vegetables; candy or other items bought in bulk at stores similar to BJ's or Sam's Club; handmade 'cars' for kids made from soda cans and wire; fresh fish caught at a nearby pond; bean bag chairs; rugs; fresh corn roasted on grill.... I haven't stopped at one of these stands, yet.... The roasted corn always looks good. Reminds me of the NC State Fair with the roasted corn stand! Mmmm.

These signs always crack me up. Since we drive on the left side of the road - the left lane is the slow lane, and the right lane is the passing lane. But, as is common anywhere - the slow folks are usually in the passing lane.

Girls and Imaginations

So what's a girl to do when she has all this bamboo in her yard (that has been cut down by the gardener) - and she's been reading about Indians and the Colonists in the New World? She makes a teepee, of course!

Our girls have had a blast building their teepees. R decided to 'weave' the bamboo leaves around her structure for her walls. B made a beaded decoration to hang from her 'ceiling'.

The fun of being a kid with a great imagination!

Here's a 'funny' for you --- our housekeeper, upon seeing the girls' creations said, "Oh, they are building huts!" In Botswana, a hut is equivalent to a teepee I guess.

We continue to have a blast in this part of the world!

By the way -it is officially 'winter' here. Today's high was up around 70. Nice winter! No chance of snow here! It just isn't warm enough to get in the pool - yet!

What the Girls Are Up To

Our girls are getting more and more accustomed to life on another continent. R has developed a strong interest in tennis. She's taking group lessons at a nearby school. However, since the other kids have been involved in other activities during their scheduled lesson time - she's had private lessons so far! Gets the coach all to herself. She is doing really well - perhaps playing tennis on the Wii has helped her backhand and serving? (hee hee) One of the 2 coaches said she's a quick learner and already has a really good backhand. She's our athletic one.

R is continuing to take piano lessons as well....she's in her 5th year of lessons. She misses her teacher back in in NC - but we're thankful to have found a really good teacher here.

And what little girl doesn't like horses????!!!! Our B is taking riding lessons. Her horse's name is 'Culboy'. She is having a blast. At the end of each lesson, she takes the saddle off Culboy and puts it away. Then she walks him to his stall, and removes his bridle and bit. (She does all this with one of the adults by her side - just in case she needs help.) For her next lesson we have to remember to bring carrots to feed Culboy! A treat for both the horse and B!

Hopefully the new camera will be here this week - or maybe next week - and then I'll have better pics!
