Nothing Goes to Waste - Visiting the Meat Dept. at the Grocery Store

I have missed not being able to blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We changed Internet service providers TODAY - and now we're back up and running after much delay. T-I-A!!

When you see the pics I've posted, you'll understand what I mean by "nothing goes to waste".

Let's start out with some nice pictures first. And, if you can't take the meat pics, just scroll to the bottom for something sweet. :-)


The "Right of Admission Reserved" posting cracks me up.


Gaborone's version of "fast food" --- a visit to the grocery store's deli. I think all grocery stores have these. They're very crowded at lunch time. Nope, never purchased anything from the deli. The choices don't suit my "taste".



We quickly discovered - as in our first week in Gabs - that all cheeseburgers are not the same. Burgers here don't even come close to what we're accustomed to in the US. Unusual (funky) spices are used in the burgers here.


Now the breads are deeeeee-licious!


We even have sushi here! Interesting for a land-locked country. Never bought any of this either, though I think we'll have to try it. R wants to try some.



Now to the meat case.................you can quickly scroll to the bottom if you don't want to see these pics. FYI - all the meat cuts are packaged and labeled. So, it isn't too icky. Just very interesting.



Ox spleen........never seen that in a meat case before. It's cheap --- just $1. Think I'll pass, and hold out for a steak instead.




Ox tongue. No thanks.


Ox tails. Really. I have been to numerous functions where these were served. I'm told they're pretty tasty. Even hubby has had them.


Ox kidney. What? No ox liver? Didn't see that choice cut.


Moving on to the poultry section. Chicken necks. I remember when my grandma...I called her "Granny" cooked these. Nope, never ate those. What is there to eat....it's just bone? I lead such a boring life, I know.


Chicken hearts. Interesting. Like I said earlier in this post...nothing goes to waste.

    I used to cut up chicken hearts (and other parts) for my dad to make giblet gravy.

    So glad to see you back on the blog roll..missed checking in with you!

  2. My grandpa's favorite part of the chicken was the neck & the gizzard;
    I grew up eating baked beef heart, fried brains w/scrambled eggs, beef tongue,& liver w/onions; S. & I love sushi; ox tail soup has been "popular" in the US for years; I cooked a kidney once right after we married & it smelled so bad that the dog wouldn't even eat it!
    But I had fun looking at all your pictures.
